In the previous post '9 types of self-care, we went through the 9 basic types of self-care activities, one of which is physical self-care.


Physical self-care means taking good care of our physical bodies by for example exercising, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep.


Physical self-care is vital because our physical body's health affects every other area of our lives. In other words, it's the ground that which everything else is built upon.


In this article, we'll go through different aspects of physical self-care and the best practices to take care of your physical well-being!

Examples of Physical Self-Care


So let's dive into some concrete examples of physical self-care:


1. Exercising


Exercising is crucial to our well-being and regular exercise should definitely be a part of your physical self-care routine!


Regular exercise:

  • Boosts physical health

  • Has positive effects on mental health

  • Promotes betters sleep

  • Increases energy levels

  • Improves longevity

  • Enhances skin health

Exercise doesn't have to mean heavy gym workouts. Regular physical activity could include walking, yoga, cycling, dancing, or any other form of movement that you enjoy and keeps you active.


When we practice self-care, we want to make our activities as enjoyable as possible so take some time to find the way to exercise that suits you the best!

2. Stretching


Stretching could be considered part of exercising, but I wanted to dedicate a separate chapter to it because it is often neglected.


Stretching has several key benefits to our body, including:

  • Improved flexibility

  • Increased range of motion

  • Better posture

  • Increased blood flow

  • Stress relief

Adding a few moments of stretching to our days is incredibly good for our bodies! You can start with just 5-10 minutes of stretching each day and gradually increase the duration as your flexibility improves.


3. Balanced Diet


Maintaining a balanced diet is a crucial part of physical self-care. It's about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health, and enhancing your mood.


A balanced diet:

  • Provides the energy you need for your daily activities

  • Helps you maintain optimal health

  • Prevents diseases

  • Enhances your brain function

Every person has different ingredients for their optimal balanced diet but in every case, balance is the key.


You shouldn't deprive yourself of the foods you love but rather find the perfect balance between healthy nutrition and occasional feasting.


4. Breathing


Breathing is of course an obvious necessity for us to stay alive, but how does it contribute to self-care? Well, in today's world when we are often in a hurry and stressed, our breathing becomes very shallow.


Shallow breathing limits the diaphragm's range of motion which can make you feel anxious and steal your energy.


Deep and mindful breathing sends a message to your brain that you are safe and it is safe to calm down and relax.


So every now and then throughout your day, become conscious of how you're breathing. If you notice that your breath is shallow, gently guide it to deepen and lengthen.

5. Relaxation


Doing something relaxing so that our body and mind have the chance to unwind and recharge is an important part of physical self-care.


Relaxation:

  • Reduces stress

  • Rejuvenates

  • Improves sleep quality

  • Increases productivity and focus

Relaxation looks different for everyone, so it's important that you find activities and techniques that resonate with you.


Here are some examples and techniques you can try to add to your daily routine and discover what works best for you:

  • Meditation

  • Yoga, especially Yin Yoga or Restorative Yoga

  • Nature walks

  • Reading

  • Listening to music

  • Taking a warm bath

  • Getting a massage

  • Doing something creative

These were just a few examples, and it might be that your body and mind need something completely different to relax and unwind. The important thing is that you find something you gladly want to do without having to force yourself.


6. Pampering


Thank goodness self-care isn't all about strict eating rules and exercising!


Pampering ourselves is also a crucial part of self-care, and you should add something delightful to your routine every day.


It might be eating a little chocolate, curling under a blanket and watching your favorite show, or getting a nice massage.


The important thing is that it is something that brings you joy. Just remember that self-care is about finding a balance between treating yourself and taking care of your overall well-being.

7. Hydration


Hydration is a crucial part of physical self-care because our bodies rely on water to function properly.


Hydration is vital to our well-being for several reasons, such as maintaining our bodily fluid balance, regulating temperature, supporting digestion, lubricating joints, and transporting nutrients and oxygen to our cells.


By prioritizing hydration as part of your physical self-care routine, you are ensuring that your body has the necessary resources to thrive.


The amount of water you should drink daily is individual, but a general guideline is to aim for about 2 liters per day.


To kick-start your daily hydration, try beginning your morning with a refreshing glass of fresh water. It's a simple yet powerful way to set yourself up for a hydrated and energized day ahead!

8. Sleep


Proper sleep is one of the most essential parts of physical self-care.


During sleep:

  • Our body and mind rest, repair, and recharge.

  • Our memories get organized.

  • Our hormones regulate and balance.

  • Our immune system strengthens.

  • Our cells regenerate.

  • Our brain clears toxins and waste.

  • Our emotions get processed.

As you can see, a whole lot happens when we are peacefully resting. So if you feel like you have something to improve about your sleep, I suggest that is the very first self-care activity you focus on!


When you feel rested and rejuvenated, you will have more energy for all the other self-care activities.



9. Regular Check-Ups


We know it's easy to put off going to the doctor or getting those routine screenings, but regular check-ups are an important part of physical self-care.


Regular check-ups:

  • Give you peace of mind about your health.

  • Allow healthcare professionals to catch any potential issues early on.

  • Help you stay on top of your health goals.

Getting regular check-ups and going to the doctor when needed is an act of self-love. It shows you that you value and respect your physical body. Because you deserve to live a happy and healthy life <3


10. Quitting Harmful Habits


Quitting harmful habits, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or unhealthy eating patterns, is a very important part of physical self-care.


Quitting harmful habits improves our health and makes room and energy for new, more beneficial habits.


Just remember that habits aren't easy to break, so be kind and patient with yourself and seek help and support when needed.


11. Body Positivity


Last but not least, the ultimate act of physical self-care is to love and accept our bodies just the way they are. Your body is unique and beautiful and it is your vessel that carries you through this life.


Body positivity means embracing all the aspects of your body: the beauty, the strength, the imperfections, the quirks, and all the things that make you who you are.


Some ways to practice body positivity are:

  • Challenge the negative thoughts about your body.

  • Focus on self-care.

  • Surround yourself with love and positivity.

  • Appreciate your body's abilities.

  • Engage in positive self-talk.

Affirmations for Physical Self-Care


Affirmations are a great way to practice self-care. Affirmations are positive statements or phrases that are used to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts and replace them with positive ones.
